"One of the most involving and rewarding music replay machines we've come across at such a sensible price and an excellent partner to the fine 840A amplifier. There simply isn't a CD player at the price that offers anywhere near as much!" - Hi-Fi Choice magazine.
Welcome to the most eagerly anticipated CD player of 2006! The Cambridge Azur 840C has been a long time in the making, but it's time that has been extremely well spent. In short, the 840C is the most technically advanced CD player in its class - with sound quality to match.
The 840C embraces a raft of proprietary technologies including ATF (Adaptive Time Filtering) asynchronous up-sampling technology which has been developed in conjunction with Anagram Technologies of Switzerland. This system intelligently interpolates 16-bit/44.1kHz CD data to 24-bit/384kHz data, through the use of a 32-bit Analog Devices Black Fin DSP (digital signal processor). This in turn feeds two 24-bit/384kHz DACs from the same company in dual differential formation. Each DAC handles just one channel for excellent stereo imaging, operating fully in differential mode for exceptionally low distortion and noise.
What this equates to for the listener is an exceptionally unforced, natural sound quality. Instruments and vocals "breath" with emotion and depth. Rather than sounding grey and mechanical, the Azur 840C uses colour, texture and fluidity of sound to create a sense of realism usually lost on players of this price.
Both unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR outputs are fitted. Two digital inputs are also provided which even allow the up-sampling and playback of other sources such as a DVD player via the Azur 840C. In addition, a recording digital output can even allow bit-for-bit data or upsampled data at 48, 96 or 192 kHz to be recorded by a suitable device.
As you'd expect from the Cambridge Audio Azur range, the 840C is also superbly built. The aluminium front panel is 7mm thick. The anti-vibration casing features a 2mm steel base. All told, this CD player weighs in at 8.5KG - more than many amplifiers of this price! Included with the player is Cambridge Audio's renowned navigator remote control which will also control an Azur amplifier. Finally, a Control Bus, IR emitter and RS232 connection make the Azur 840C easy to link up to a multi-room system, such as the Cambridge Audio Incognito.
